Elara stood beside the ancient counter, her heart beating in time with the villagers who had gathered around her. Elder Maeve, her face etched with a sorrow that seemed as old as the stones beneath their feet, stood beside her, her hand resting lightly on Elara’s shoulder. Kael, his usual skepticism softened by a newfound respect, watched from the edge of the crowd, his gaze fixed on Elara.

The counter, usually a somber sentinel of despair, was no longer merely ticking. It was glowing. A soft, ethereal light pulsed from its worn, wooden frame, casting a warm luminescence onto the faces of the villagers. The digits, which had so often filled Elara with a chilling dread, were no longer a stark testament to the encroaching darkness. “It’s… it’s changing,” Elara whispered, her voice filled with awe. She traced the glowing symbols with a fingertip, feeling a faint warmth radiate from the wood. It was as if the counter itself was awakening, responding to the collective will of the village.
