Chapter 11
Maeve's Revelation
Elder Maeve, seeing Elara's determination, reveals a personal connection to the counter and the darkness, sharing a piece of her hidden sorrow.
The air in Elder Maeve’s small, herb-scented cottage grew heavy, not with the usual comforting aroma of dried lavender and chamomile, but with a stillness that prickled Elara’s skin. Outside, the sun, a pale imitation of its former glory, cast long, hesitant shadows that seemed to cling to the edges of the village. The counter, a silent, ever-present reminder of the encroaching gloom, ticked its mournful rhythm in the village square, each click a tiny shard of fear. Elara, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest, watched Elder Maeve’s face. The elder’s eyes, usually alight with a gentle wisdom, were clouded with a sorrow so profound it seemed to have etched itself into the very lines of her skin.
“You have seen the digits, Elara,” Maeve’s voice was a low murmur, like pebbles smoothed by a river. “You have felt their pull. But you do not understand the weight they carry.” She gestured towards the window, where the twilight was deepening into a bruised purple. “The darkness… it is not merely a thing that comes and goes. It is a hunger. And it is always listening.”
Elara clutched the worn leather-bound book to her chest, its pages filled with the cryptic symbols she had painstakingly begun to decipher. The counter, she was slowly realizing, was more than just a grim tally. It was a key, a language, a story waiting to be told. But Maeve’s words painted a picture far more terrifying than mere numbers.
