The musty scent of aged paper clung to Lily like a second skin. She traced a faded ink line with her fingertip, her heart thrumming a rhythm of excited discovery. This wasn’t just a collection of old thoughts; it was a map, a puzzle box, a whispered secret from a forgotten past. Aunt Elara’s journal, with its spidery script and smudged illustrations, was unfolding a story far grander than Lily had ever imagined.
The entry that had made her breath catch was tucked near the back, a hasty addition, as if Elara had scribbled it in a rush before hurrying off to an important meeting. “The Falcon’s Perch,” it read, followed by a series of symbols Lily didn’t recognize. Below them, a short, rhyming couplet:
Where the river bends to kiss the sky,
And the silent sentinel watches nigh,
Seek the shadow that the sun forgets,
To find the prize that fate begets.
