The air in Silas’s study hung thick with the scent of aged paper and something akin to dried herbs, a comforting aroma that usually soothed Elara’s frayed nerves. Tonight, however, it did little to quell the storm brewing within her. She sat opposite him, the small, intricately carved table between them feeling like a chasm. The puzzle, its unfinished grid a silent accusation, rested on a velvet cloth, its cryptic symbols seeming to watch them both.

“You’ve been holding back, Silas,” Elara said, her voice softer than she intended, a plea rather than an accusation. “I can feel it. Every time I ask about the puzzle, about its origins, you deflect. You give me riddles, not answers.” She gestured towards the grid. “This isn’t just some ancient artifact you stumbled upon. It’s connected to me, isn’t it? To what I’ve lost.”

Silas’s gaze, usually so steady, flickered. He reached for a worn, leather-bound book on his desk, his fingers tracing the faded gold tooling. His silence stretched, punctuated only by the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner, each tick a heavy hammer blow against Elara’s mounting anxiety.
