Using the Chronicle, Elias predicts a minor market crash. He tries to warn his firm, but is dismissed. The crash occurs, validating the ledger and his fears.
The hum of the servers was usually a comforting lullaby, a constant reminder of the digital heartbeat of Sterling & Croft. But today, it felt like the thrumming of a trapped insect, a frantic energy that mirrored my own. My fingers flew across the keyboard, not with the usual confident glide of a seasoned analyst, but with the desperate urgency of a child tracing a path through a minefield. The Chronicle lay open beside my monitor, its brittle pages whispering secrets I was only just beginning to decipher.
“Come on, you magnificent beast,” I muttered, coaxing a complex algorithm to spit out its findings. I’d spent the last three days fueled by lukewarm coffee and the gnawing certainty that the patterns in the Chronicle weren't just historical curiosities. They were a roadmap, a terrifyingly accurate prophecy of financial tremors. And the next tremor, according to page 73, was due to hit within the week. A ‘minor correction,’ the elegant script called it, a swift dip designed to shake out the weak hands and prepare the ground for a larger play.
“Elias, you’re looking a bit green around the gills,” Sarah, one of the junior analysts, chirped, her voice cutting through my concentration like a poorly executed trade. She nudged a plate of stale donuts towards me. “You’ve been holed up in here since dawn. Burning the midnight oil, or just trying to decipher the meaning of life in a spreadsheet?”
