The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast a sickly green glow onto the rain-slicked street. Inside, the air hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. I huddled in a booth by the window, the chill of the night seeping through my worn jacket. The Chronicle lay open on the table, its brittle pages illuminated by the dim overhead light. Each symbol, each cryptic entry, felt like a whisper from a forgotten age, a secret language I was only just beginning to decipher.

My phone buzzed, jolting me from my thoughts. A message from an unknown number. No name, just a string of characters that looked vaguely familiar, like a distorted echo of something I’d seen in the Chronicle itself. Curiosity, that ever-present companion of mine, prickled at my skin. I typed a cautious reply: *Who is this?*

The response was instantaneous, and chillingly direct. *The one who understands the weight of what you hold.*
