The air grew heavy, thick with a cloying sweetness that was more rot than bloom. Eira’s boots, once sturdy leather, now felt sodden, clinging to the decaying earth with a greedy suction. The trees here were skeletal, their branches clawing at a sky that had long since surrendered its blue to a perpetual, sickly grey. This was not the vibrant, breathing forest she knew, the one that pulsed with life and whispered secrets into her dreams. This was its dying breath, a landscape choked by a venomous sorrow.
