Chapter 6
Whispers of the Corrupted

The air grew heavy, the sunlight filtering through the canopy taking on a sickly, jaundiced hue. Eira pressed on, her boots sinking into soil that felt unnaturally soft, almost yielding like sodden moss. The familiar scent of pine and damp earth was now overlaid with a faint, cloying sweetness, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. The trees here were older, their bark gnarled like the faces of slumbering giants, but their leaves, even those still clinging, were tinged with a greyish pallor.
A rustle in the undergrowth, sharper than any she’d heard before, made her freeze. Her hand instinctively went to the smooth, cool stone she wore around her neck, a gift from Elder Maeve. It offered little comfort now. The forest was alive, yes, but its life was strained, its breath ragged.
