The air in the woods hung thick and cloying, a far cry from the crisp, life-giving breath Eira had always known. Each step crunched on a carpet of brittle, grey leaves, a sound that grated against her soul. The familiar, comforting embrace of the ancient forest was gone, replaced by a suffocating chill that seeped into her bones. This was no longer the sanctuary of her childhood, but a place of creeping dread, a landscape mirroring the sickness that was slowly devouring her world.

She clutched the worn leather pouch Elder Maeve had given her, its contents – dried herbs, smooth river stones, and a single, iridescent feather – offering little solace against the palpable decay. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a counterpoint to the unnerving silence that had fallen over the trees. Even the birds had ceased their songs, their absence a mournful testament to the blight’s insidious spread.

Eira’s gaze swept over the gnarled trunks of ancient oaks, their bark peeling like sunburnt skin, revealing patches of sickly, black rot. Where vibrant moss once clung, now only a dry, powdery dust remained. Twisted vines, once supple and green, lay like desiccated corpses, their thorny tendrils reaching out with a malevolent intent. She imagined them as grasping fingers, desperate to ensnare anything that still held a spark of life.
