The air in the abandoned observatory crackled, not with the static of ancient machinery, but with an almost palpable tension. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy dome, illuminating the scene like a macabre stage. Marcus, his knuckles white where he gripped a modified Geiger counter, felt a tremor of something akin to dread – a rare visitor in his usually placid quantum realm. Beside him, Lena, her usual journalistic poise replaced by a fierce, almost desperate resolve, scanned the empty space, her eyes darting from shadow to shadow.

“They’re here,” Marcus breathed, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the silence. The Geiger counter, an instrument usually reserved for the infinitesimally small, was now a beacon, its frantic clicking a testament to the anomalous energy signatures pulsing around them. “More than I anticipated.”

Lena nodded, her gaze fixed on a distant, dark corner. “My source confirmed it. They’re bringing the big guns this time. Not just suits and briefcases.”
