The air in Marcus’s makeshift laboratory, a repurposed industrial loft that smelled faintly of ozone and stale coffee, crackled with an almost palpable tension. It was a space that mirrored the man himself: cluttered with the detritus of genius, a symphony of wires, oscilloscopes, and chalkboards scrawled with equations that would make Einstein weep. Lena, perched on a precariously stacked pile of scientific journals, felt like an intruder in a sacred, albeit chaotic, temple.

“You’re sure about this, Marcus?” she asked, her voice a low murmur against the hum of dormant machinery. Certainty is a myth in this universe. But this is our best chance.” He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair, his gaze fixed on the bird. “They’re getting closer. I can feel it. Their methods, their technology… it’s advanced, but it’s crude. Brute force. They don’t understand the… the *nuance*.”
