The air grew thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sweet and faintly metallic, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. Kia stumbled, his boots sinking into a spongy, yielding ground that seemed to exhale a faint mist with every step. It wasn't soil, not as he knew it. It was soft, almost yielding, a carpet of moss so deep it felt like walking on a cloud. Above him, the canopy of the forest had thinned, giving way to an ethereal glow that pulsed with a gentle rhythm.

He paused, his breath catching in his throat. Before him stretched a vista so bizarre, so utterly alien, it stole the very air from his lungs. Islands. Not of rock and earth, but of colossal mushrooms. They rose from the mist like ancient, gnarled trees, their caps spreading wide, blotting out the sky in places. Some were a vibrant, almost aggressive red, dotted with white flecks that seemed to wink like tiny stars. Others shimmered with an iridescent purple, their stalks thick and ribbed, resembling the columns of a forgotten temple. And everywhere, a soft, bioluminescent light emanated from them, casting the entire landscape in shades of emerald, sapphire, and a ghostly white. It was a world painted in living light.

Kia had seen strange things since he’d stepped beyond the familiar trees of his village, since his mother’s desperate calls had faded into the rustling leaves behind him. He’d navigated islands that floated on currents of pure energy, seen creatures that defied description, but this… this was different. This was a landscape born from dreams, or perhaps nightmares.
