Chapter 14
The Dragon's Awakening
A tremor runs through the egg. A faint cracking sound emerges, signaling the imminent hatching. Kia feels a surge of adrenaline, a mix of fear and anticipation for the creature he's nurtured.
The air in the small clearing was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a familiar perfume that had clung to Kia’s clothes for weeks. He sat cross-legged, his back against the rough bark of an ancient oak, its branches a tangled silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. In his lap, cradled with a tenderness born of desperate hope, lay the dragon egg. It was no longer the smooth, cool stone he’d found nestled amongst the roots of a colossal, bioluminescent mushroom. A network of fine, hairline fractures now webbed its obsidian surface, like a delicate frost spreading across a frozen pond.
He ran a thumb over one of the nascent cracks, a tremor of anticipation, laced with a chilling thread of fear, coursing through him. It had been days, perhaps weeks, since he’d first discovered it, nestled in the soft, mossy earth of the Dragon Island. He remembered the sheer disbelief, the way his heart had leaped in his chest, a frantic, trapped bird. He’d taken it, instinctively, as if it were a lost piece of himself, a forgotten promise. He’d wrapped it carefully in a spare tunic, its warmth a welcome contrast to the growing chill that had settled deep within him, a coldness that seemed to emanate from the egg itself, slowly leaching into his very core.
He’d spoken to it, of course. Whispered secrets he wouldn’t dare voice to another living soul. He’d told it about Elara, his sister, her laugh like wind chimes, her eyes the color of summer sky. He’d confessed the gnawing guilt that had been his constant companion since the day she’d vanished, swallowed by the very forest he now traversed. He’d told it about his mother’s tear-streaked face, her relentless, pleading calls that had faded into the rustling leaves behind him, each one a tiny shard of betrayal he carried. The egg, silent and inert, had absorbed it all, a dark, porous sponge soaking up his sorrow, his determination, his very essence.
