Chapter 10
The Heart's Cold Weight
Kia notices a change within himself; his own warmth seems to lessen, drawn into the egg. He feels a growing emotional distance, as if the egg is consuming his inner fire, transferring it to itself.
The chill had settled deep within Kia, a cold that had nothing to do with the damp air of the forest or the biting wind that sometimes snaked through the ancient trees. It was a cold that emanated from within, a slow seep that had begun the moment he’d tucked the dragon egg into his worn leather backpack. He’d noticed it at first as a subtle shift, a lessening of his own inner fire. His tears, once ready to spill at the slightest ache of memory, now felt distant, frozen before they could even form.
He sat by the meager fire he’d managed to coax from damp kindling, the flames licking greedily at the meager wood. The egg, nestled carefully amongst his provisions, seemed to pulse with a faint, internal light, a soft luminescence that was almost imperceptible against the backdrop of the crackling fire. He ran a hand over the rough fabric of his backpack, his fingers brushing against the cool, unyielding surface of the egg. A strange lassitude had fallen over him in recent days. The urgency that had propelled him into the forest, the burning need to find his sister, felt muted, like a song heard from a great distance. The vibrant, electric hum of his own emotions, the very things that had made him Kia – his fierce determination, his deep sorrow, his boundless love for his lost sibling – seemed to be dimming, their edges softened, their intensity leached away.
