The air in the hidden grove hung thick and still, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sharp and metallic that Rowan couldn't quite place. He shivered, pulling his threadbare cloak tighter, though the chill was deep within him, a cold that had settled after the moon’s brutal unveiling. He’d seen Elara leave, a wraith slipping back into the encroaching dusk, her parting words a whisper of caution that echoed in the sudden quiet. "He watches," she had said, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, fixed on something Rowan couldn't discern in the dense canopy. "And he waits."

He’d dismissed it then, the lingering terror of his transformation overriding any external threat. But now, alone, the woods seemed to press in, alive with unseen eyes. A twig snapped nearby, a sound amplified in the oppressive silence. Rowan’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. He strained his ears, every nerve ending alight. It wasn't the rustle of a deer, nor the scurry of a fox. It was deliberate. Measured.

A figure emerged from the shadows, not a creature of the woods, but a man cloaked in shadows as deep as the night itself. Tall and lean, his face was obscured by a cowl, but Rowan felt a prickle of unease, a recognition of a predatory stillness that mirrored something he was beginning to understand within himself. The man stopped a few paces away, his gaze, though unseen, felt like a physical weight.
