The Final Sleep

8 min read

The air in Elara’s room hummed with an unnatural stillness, a silence that pressed in on her ears, far more profound than the usual quiet of her sleepless nights. Moonlight, thick and silvery, spilled through the window, painting the familiar objects of her room in shades of ethereal blue. The Night Bloom, its petals a deep, velvety indigo, sat on her bedside table, a silent promise and a potent threat. She had taken it every night for weeks now, and each time, the descent was deeper, the sleep more absolute. Tonight, however, felt different. It felt like a precipice.

They were drawing closer.

With a deep, steadying breath, Elara brought the bloom to her lips. The taste was subtle, like dew on a midnight flower, and as it dissolved on her tongue, the familiar, heavy languor began to creep through her limbs. Her eyelids grew leaden, her thoughts began to drift, like dandelion seeds caught on a gentle breeze. This was it. The final sleep. The ultimate surrender.
