Elara drifted, a feather on a silent current. The world around her was a tapestry woven from moonlight and shadow, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something sweet and faintly metallic. She was looking for something, a thread in the vast, inky fabric of her dream. The bloom, yes, the bloom was always the anchor, the promise of respite. But tonight, it felt more elusive, like a shy creature hiding behind the gnarled roots of a dream-tree.
Then, a flicker. Not of moonlight, but of something colder, sharper. It was a sound, a whisper that slithered through the stillness, not like the gentle sighs of the night bloom, but like the rasp of dry leaves skittering across stone. Elara froze, her dream-self instinctively recoiling. This was not the familiar, comforting echo of her own subconscious. This was… an intrusion.
A shape began to coalesce in the distance, a silhouette against the bruised-purple sky. It was tall, impossibly so, and its form seemed to shift, to ripple, as if it were made of smoke and doubt. There were no distinct features, no face, but Elara felt a prickling sensation, as if unseen eyes were dissecting her, cataloging her fears.
