Chapter 7
Awakening to Shadows
The first sliver of dawn, a timid blush against the bruised velvet of the pre-morning sky, found Elara stirring. Not with the jarring jolt of an alarm, nor the restless tossing of a night spent wrestling with wakefulness, but with a slow, unhurried unfurling, like a fern frond uncoiling in the warmth of a hidden sun. It was a sensation so novel, so utterly alien, that for a breathless moment, she simply lay there, eyes wide in the dim light, cataloging the absence of the usual gnawing anxiety, the frantic racing of her thoughts.

But as she swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet meeting the cool wood of the floor, a subtle unease began to creep in. The peace was almost too profound, too complete. It was as if the vibrant colours of her waking life had been muted, their intensity dialled down. She felt… calm, yes, but also a touch detached, as if she were observing herself from a distance.
