Awakening to Shadows
The morning light, when it finally arrived, felt less like a gentle awakening and more like an invasion. Elara blinked, her eyes gritty and protesting against the brightness, even though it was filtered through the thick linen curtains. She pushed herself up, a strange heaviness clinging to her limbs, a phantom echo of the profound stillness of the night. The familiar ache behind her eyes was less sharp today, replaced by a dull, persistent thrumming, like a distant drumbeat that had followed her from the depths of her sleep.
She padded to the window, drawing back the curtains to reveal a world painted in soft pastels. The dew-kissed garden shimmered, the roses, plump and crimson, unfurling their velvety petals to greet the sun. It was a beautiful sight, a morning that most people would welcome with a sigh of contentment. But for Elara, it was a reminder of the hours she had lost, the hours she had spent adrift in a place that felt both intimately hers and terrifyingly alien.
The taste of the night bloom, a faint, earthy sweetness, still lingered on her tongue. It had worked, of course. The sleep had been absolute, a oblivion that had swallowed her whole. But the silence had been broken by a cacophony of fractured images, of fleeting faces and half-heard whispers that had left her feeling more unsettled than rested. She remembered a chase, a frantic scramble through moonlit corridors that smelled of dust and forgotten secrets. She remembered a hand, small and cold, reaching out to her, and a voice, a child’s voice, crying out her name. Elara. It had been her own name, but it had sounded like a plea.
