Elara traced the velvety petal of the night bloom, its deep indigo hue absorbing the faint moonlight that filtered through her window. It felt cool and impossibly soft against her fingertips, like a sigh made tangible. For weeks, this ethereal flower had been her secret, her sanctuary from the relentless chase of wakefulness. Each night, after brewing its potent tea, she would feel the gentle pull, the sweet surrender, and then… nothing. A blessed, profound oblivion that was both a gift and a growing mystery.

Tonight, however, a prickle of unease accompanied the familiar calm. The dream that had clung to her upon waking was more vivid, more insistent than usual. It wasn't the hazy, fragmented imagery of previous nights, but a sharp, crystalline scene: a sun-drenched meadow, laughter like tinkling bells, and a small hand reaching for a bright red ball. The joy in the dream was so pure, so potent, it had left a lingering ache in her chest. And then, the shadow. A swift, dark shape that blotted out the sun, a chilling whisper that stole the laughter.

She sipped the tea, the floral notes mingling with a faint, earthy bitterness. As the warmth spread through her, the edges of her room began to soften, the familiar shapes of her bookshelf and desk blurring into a comforting haze. She welcomed the descent, the loosening grip of consciousness. But as she drifted, the meadow from her dream flickered at the edges of her vision, a persistent echo.
