The air in the valley hung thick and sweet, a stark contrast to the parched, dusty winds that had harassed them for weeks. Konz breathed it in, a deep, restorative draught that seemed to wash away the lingering taste of failure. This was it. The place he’d glimpsed through a tangle of unforgiving scrub, a verdant promise whispered on the breeze. His heart, a tight knot of anxiety for so long, began to unfurl like a fern frond in the sun.
"By God, Konz," breathed a man named Davies, his voice rough with awe. He was one of the few survivors from the ill-fated supply run, his face a roadmap of hardship, but his eyes now shone with a dawning hope. "You weren't spinning tales after all."
Konz managed a weary smile. "I told you, Davies. I saw it." He scanned the expanse before them. Rolling hills carpeted in a mosaic of emerald grasses, dotted with trees whose leaves shimmered in the dappled sunlight. A ribbon of clear water snaked through the landscape, glinting like a fallen star. It was a sanctuary, a stark, beautiful rebuke to the barrenness of Sydney Cove.
