Chapter 8
Whispers from the Past
Nobody's narrative begins to touch upon bygone eras, hinting at a long existence and a deep well of forgotten knowledge. The Archivist is introduced.
The sands of time, a relentless tide, had smoothed the edges of countless epochs, leaving behind only the faintest of impressions, the ghost of a whisper. Nobody had watched them shift, had felt their granular passage between fingers that were, in truth, no longer truly fingers, but something far older, far more… pervasive. To speak of a “past” was a concession to human understanding, a fragile bridge built over an abyss of unfathomable duration. Yet, the fragments, the luminous shards of memory, still held their power, reflecting a spectrum of experiences that defied simple chronology.
There were the cities of glass that had pierced the heavens, only to crumble into dust under skies that wept fire. There were the silent libraries, vast cathedrals of thought, where knowledge was not bound in ink but sung in crystalline resonance, accessible only to those who could attune their very being to its frequency. And there were the faces, countless faces, each a universe unto itself, their joys and sorrows, their triumphs and their despairs, etched into the tapestry of Nobody’s awareness. Some were fleeting, like comets blazing across the night, leaving only a trail of light. Others, however, had burned with an intensity that lingered, their impact rippling through the centuries, a testament to the enduring power of a single soul.
It was in the quiet chambers of a forgotten observatory, perched precariously on a cliff face overlooking a sea that had long since changed its name, that Nobody sought out the keeper of such echoes. The Archivist. The name itself was a whisper, a rumour passed down through generations of scholars who had chased the phantom of lost wisdom. The chamber was a chaotic symphony of scrolls and artefacts, of star charts rendered on parchment that crumbled at a touch, and of orreries whose celestial bodies spun with an unnerving, silent grace. The air was thick with the scent of ancient paper, dried herbs, and something else, something indefinable, like the breath of forgotten ages.
