Detective Thorne stood at the precipice of a precipice, the stale air of the precinct clinging to him like a shroud. The ‘Evergreen Murders,’ as the tabloids had so dramatically christened them, were a festering wound on his career, a phantom limb that ached with unanswered questions. For five years, the case had been a relentless tide, pulling him under, spitting him back out, always with the same, infuriating lack of resolution. But lately, the tide had begun to shift, revealing not the expected debris of human error, but something… deliberate.

He traced the faded ink of a witness statement, a young woman, barely out of her teens, who had reported seeing a figure loitering near the park on the night of the third murder. Her description was frustratingly vague – “tall, cloaked, like a shadow that had learned to walk.” At the time, it had been dismissed as the ramblings of a frightened civilian. Now, Thorne saw a glint of something more. Another vague report, from a different victim’s neighbour, spoke of an unusual silence in the alleyway just moments before the discovery. Not the absence of sound, but a *stilled* silence, as if the very air had held its breath.

He shuffled through a stack of seemingly unrelated cold cases, his gaze snagging on a peculiar anomaly. A string of minor thefts, spread across different districts over a span of three years, all involving the pilfering of obscure, antique maps. The modus operandi was identical: no forced entry, no witnesses, just gone. The value of the maps was negligible, their purpose baffling. Yet, the dates and locations… they formed a disquieting pattern, mirroring the geographical spread of the Evergreen Murders, albeit with a significant temporal lag. Thorne felt a prickle of unease, a cold tendril coiling in his gut. These weren’t random occurrences. They were threads, woven with an almost invisible hand.
