The air in the abandoned observatory was thick with dust and the scent of decay, a fitting tableau for a meeting that had been decades in the making. Elara Vance stood at the center of the room, the broken dome above offering a fractured view of a bruised twilight sky. Her breath hitched, a small, ragged sound swallowed by the cavernous silence. She had followed the breadcrumbs, pieced together the whispers, and now, here she was. Waiting.
Across the vast, circular space, a figure emerged from the deeper shadows. Not a stride, not a step, but a fluid unfolding, as if the darkness itself had coalesced into form. Nobody. The name felt insufficient, a flimsy label for the weight of presence that emanated from the being before her. There was no discernible gender, no age etched into the smooth planes of their features, only an unnerving stillness that spoke of infinite patience.
“You are… Elara Vance,” Nobody’s voice was a melody of tones, neither male nor female, neither young nor old, but something ancient and resonant. It hummed in the marrow of her bones.
