It had been a week since the last inexplicable whisper, a week since the phantom sensation of being watched had intensified to a suffocating degree. Detective Thorne’s dismissive reassurances, the logical explanations offered by friends, none of it had settled the gnawing disquiet in her gut. There was a pattern, a subtle orchestration, and she was beginning to suspect she was merely a pawn in a game she didn’t understand.

A shadow fell across her table. Not a sudden, sharp shadow, but a slow, creeping dusk that seemed to absorb the ambient light. Elara looked up, her breath catching in her throat. Standing before her was a figure that defied easy description. Neither distinctly male nor female, the individual possessed an aura of profound stillness, as if carved from the very fabric of time. Their features were indistinct, almost a blur, as if the eye struggled to focus, to pin down a definitive form. Yet, the eyes, when they met hers, were startlingly clear, ancient and knowing. They held the infinite depth of a starlit sky, and within them, Elara saw not judgment, nor malice, but a dispassionate, almost weary, understanding.

“You seek answers,” a voice said, soft as falling snow, yet it resonated deep within Elara’s bones. It was a voice that seemed to have no origin, no source, but simply *was*.
