Chapter 4: The Resonance
Xander and the Nightfall Pack attempt to escape Veridia's blockade with Ryn's ship. During the escape, Xander's latent empathic ability activates, allowing him to sense the emotions of enemy pilots. They are cornered but receive a mysterious signal from an unknown ally who guides them through a hidden route, leaving Xander questioning who else is watching.
The ship groaned as it lifted off, its patched hull protesting against the sudden acceleration. Xander braced himself against a cargo crate, the data drive still warm in his pocket. Beside him, Lena gripped a overhead strap, her eyes fixed on the viewport where Dustfall's grimy sprawl shrank beneath them. The rest of the pack—a dozen shifters from the Nightfall Pack—huddled in the cargo bay, their injuries bandaged, their faces grim but determined.
Ryn's voice crackled over the intercom. "We're climbing fast. Syndicate patrols are already scrambling. I count four interceptors on approach. This is going to get tight."
Xander pushed himself upright and strode to the cockpit. Ryn sat in the pilot's seat, her hands dancing across the controls. A holographic display showed the system: three dots representing their ship, and four red icons converging from different vectors. "Can we outrun them?" he asked.
