Mittens kneaded the worn velvet cushion with her paws, a tiny frown etched between her delicate whiskers. The moonlight, usually a comforting blanket, felt like a spotlight tonight, and she squirmed under its gaze. Outside the cozy nook of her favorite abandoned armchair, the alley hummed with a different kind of energy. Barnaby was practicing his clumsy attempts at stage diving off a low dumpster, much to the amusement of a few younger kittens. Whiskers was tuning his guitar, the familiar, soulful twang a constant reassurance, while Patches was meticulously polishing her drumsticks, her movements precise and purposeful. They were preparing for their next practice, their minds already on the new song Mittens had been working on.

“You ready, Mittens?” Whiskers’ voice, warm and encouraging, drifted through the open window. “We’ve got the bridge for ‘Cobblestone Heart’ ready for your magic touch.”

Mittens’ heart gave a little flutter, a mix of pride and dread. She was ready. She’d spent hours, days even, coaxing the melody from her mind, letting the alley’s stories weave themselves into the notes. The melancholic rise and fall of the tune mirrored the quiet desperation she’d felt when the wrecking ball had first cast its shadow. The bridge, a soaring, hopeful passage, was her answer to that fear, a testament to the resilience of their little community. But taking credit for it, for any of it, felt like stepping onto a stage too grand for her paws.
