The scent of singed eyebrows and something vaguely like burnt sugar still clung to the air, a testament to the recent, rather explosive, encounter with Bartholomew Bumble, the alchemist whose jealousy had the distinct aroma of stale desperation. Leo, clutching a slightly warped retort like a shield, watched Finn carefully sweep away the last of the shattered glass. Finn, bless his musically inclined heart, hadn't batted an eye at the sudden appearance of a disgruntled, potion-snatching rival. He’d simply strummed a surprisingly calming chord on his lute, which had, for some inexplicable reason, made Bartholomew Bumble momentarily freeze, clutching his ears as if assaulted by a particularly off-key rendition of “Ode to Joy.”

“So,” Finn said, his voice a low, melodic rumble that always managed to smooth the frazzled edges of Leo’s nerves. “That was… eventful.” He gestured with his broom, a stray spark of his lute’s magic, perhaps, making the dust bunnies perform a brief, synchronized jig before settling back down.

Leo swallowed, his throat feeling as dry as a poorly stoppered alembic. “Eventful,” he echoed, the word sounding ridiculously inadequate. He’d nearly lost his life’s work – or at least, the potion that was *supposed* to be his life’s work – to a man whose alchemical prowess seemed to be directly proportional to the size of his ego. And Finn, ever the rock, had just… handled it. Like it was just another Tuesday, albeit one with a slightly more flamboyant villain.
