The air in Leo’s small, cluttered laboratory, usually a symphony of bubbling beakers and the faint, metallic tang of alchemical reagents, had taken on a new, rather alarming note. It was a scent, sweet and cloying, like overheated jam mixed with a whisper of crushed violets and something vaguely… fizzy. Leo, meticulously grinding moonpetal dust with a mortar and pestle, felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. He’d been trying to *contain* the residual fumes of the love potion, a task proving as easy as corralling a flock of hyperactive pixies.

Finn, bless his oblivious heart, had wandered in a moment ago, humming a lively, off-key tune as he usually did when a new melody was percolating in his brain. He’d paused at the doorway, his brow furrowed, then taken a deep, involuntary inhale. Leo’s heart had performed a frantic jig against his ribs.

“Whoa,” Finn had breathed, his humming ceasing abruptly. He blinked, his usually sharp blue eyes a little unfocused. “What is that amazing smell, Leo?”
