Chapter 7
The First Confrontation
The Obsidian Hand makes their move, attempting to steal the Faberlic. Elara, using her nascent powers and quick wit, narrowly escapes, realizing the true threat.
The air in Elara’s small, cluttered workshop hummed with an unusual tension, a prickling sensation that crawled across her skin like a thousand tiny ants. It was the kind of feeling that whispered of approaching storms, or perhaps, something far more sinister. She’d been meticulously grinding moonpetal dust, its pearlescent shimmer catching the dim light filtering through the grimy windowpanes, when the first subtle tremor ran through the workbench. Not an earthquake, but a vibration that felt… deliberate.
Her heart gave a nervous lurch. The Faberlic, nestled on its velvet cushion, seemed to pulse faintly, a silent alarm bell only she could hear. The faint, sweet scent that clung to it, a blend of night-blooming jasmine and something wilder, earthier, was becoming as familiar to her as her own name.
A sharp rap, too forceful to be a friendly knock, echoed from her door. Elara froze, her hand hovering over the mortar. Who would come to her doorstep, here in the forgotten alleyways of the Alchemist’s Quarter, with such aggression? She wasn’t exactly popular. The whispers of her disgrace still clung to her like the persistent scent of failure.
