Chapter 4
The Shadow's Approach
Unbeknownst to Elara, her use of the Faberlic has attracted unwanted attention. Cloaked figures, the Obsidian Hand, sense the awakening power and begin their pursuit.
The air in Elara’s small cottage hummed with a new, vibrant energy. It was the kind of energy that tickled her fingertips and made the wild herbs on her windowsill sway as if caught in a gentle breeze, even though the window was shut tight. She held the Faberlic bottle, its glass cool against her palm, and traced the delicate, raised flowers that seemed to bloom and fade with each breath she took. A faint, sweet scent, like moonlight distilled into a fragrance, wafted from it, carrying with it wisps of forgotten laughter and the echo of a lullaby.
She had spent the morning experimenting, hesitantly at first. A single drop, dabbed onto her wrist, had brought forth a fleeting image: her mother’s face, younger, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she taught Elara how to identify moonpetal blossoms. Another drop, and she saw herself, a child, giggling as she chased fireflies through a meadow that no longer existed. It was intoxicating, this flood of memories, a balm to the ache of her solitary existence. But it was also unsettling. This power, this connection to a past she had tried so hard to bury, felt both like a gift and a burden.
Lost in the quiet magic of the bottle, Elara didn't notice the subtle shift in the world outside. The cheerful chirping of the forest birds seemed to falter, replaced by a hushed stillness. The sunlight, which had been dappled and warm, now felt thin, as if a veil had been drawn across the sky.
