Elias Thorne’s apartment, usually a sanctuary of ordered spreadsheets and the quiet hum of his high-powered computer, felt like a cage. The ledger, its leather cover worn smooth with age, lay open on his desk, a silent oracle that had both illuminated his path and plunged him into a dizzying labyrinth. The numbers, the symbols, the impossibly accurate predictions – they pointed to something far grander, and far more terrifying, than a mere fluke. A pattern of manipulation, woven through centuries, a tapestry of greed and control stretching back into the mists of time. His ambition, once a bright beacon, now flickered with the cold dread of an unknown adversary. He needed answers, and the hushed whispers of the financial world offered none. There was only one place left to turn.

Professor Alistair Finch. The name had surfaced during one of Elias’s late-night dives into obscure financial history forums, a name associated with esoteric theories and a deep, almost unsettling, knowledge of economic anomalies. The professor lived, or rather, existed, in a rambling old Victorian house on the edge of the city, a place that time seemed to have forgotten. Elias imagined dusty tomes, the scent of pipe tobacco, and a mind that had seen more than most. He hoped, desperately, that Professor Finch’s eccentricity hid a kernel of truth that could help him grasp the enormity of what he’d uncovered.

The doorbell chimed, a discordant, slightly off-key sound that seemed to echo the disarray in Elias’s own mind. The door creaked open, revealing a man who looked as though he had stepped directly from a sepia-toned photograph. Professor Finch was a wisp of a man, his tweed jacket slightly too large, his silver hair a wild halo around a face etched with a thousand stories. His eyes, however, were remarkably sharp, like chips of polished obsidian, and they seemed to pierce right through Elias’s carefully constructed composure.
