Chapter 16
A Narrow Escape
Elias narrowly avoids capture or worse, thanks to his quick thinking or unexpected help. The stakes are higher than ever.
The cool night air did little to calm the frantic thrumming in Elias’s chest. He scrambled down the fire escape, the metal groaning under his weight like a wounded beast. Below, the alleyway was a jagged ribbon of shadow and discarded refuse, a stark contrast to the sterile, polished corridors he’d just fled. He landed with a jarring thud, his briefcase clutched tight, its contents – the ledger and his hastily scribbled notes – feeling heavier than lead.
He didn’t dare look back. The glint of a flashlight beam, the sharp bark of a command – these were the sounds that had sent him bolting. He’d been so close, so agonizingly close, to uncovering the next phase of their plan. He’d seen the coded entries, the dates that pulsed with an ominous significance, the names that hinted at a global network of influence. And then, the alarm. A silent, insidious trigger that had sent him scrambling for his life.
He darted into the street, blending with the sparse late-night pedestrian traffic. Each shadow seemed to stretch, to conceal a lurking threat. His mind raced, replaying the last few minutes. He’d been in the archive, a place so forgotten it felt like a tomb. He’d found it, the supplementary volume, tucked away behind a false panel. It was heavier than the original ledger, its binding worn smooth by centuries of handling. He’d barely had time to scan a few pages, to grasp the terrifying scope of what they intended, before the automated security system had whirred to life.
