The hum of the city was usually a comfort to Elias, a familiar symphony of progress and purpose. Tonight, however, it felt more like a predator’s growl, each distant siren a warning, each flicker of streetlamp a watchful eye. He clutched the worn leather satchel tighter, the weight of the ledger within a constant, almost physical pressure against his side. Every shadow seemed to deepen, every rustle of wind in neglected alleyways sounded like footsteps. He’d taken a circuitous route back to his small apartment, a route he’d meticulously planned, doubling back twice, crossing streets unexpectedly, hoping to shake any unseen tail. Yet, the feeling of being watched persisted, a prickling sensation on the back of his neck.
