The hum of Techtopia was a lullaby Ruby had known her entire life, a constant, gentle thrum that vibrated through the soles of her worn boots and settled deep within her bones. It was the sound of survival, of progress, of the very air she breathed, all thanks to the legend whispered in hushed tones by her mothers, Lucy and Luna, and their mothers before them: the Cyber Dragon. Tonight, however, the lullaby felt discordant, a subtle tremor beneath the surface, like a worried sigh within the city’s immense, intricate heart.

Ruby sat cross-legged on the cool, metallic floor of her small workshop, a space carved out of a forgotten alcove in their residential block. Scattered around her were the gleaming innards of discarded circuits, spools of shimmering fiber optic cable, and the intricate skeletal frames of defunct droids. Each piece was a story, a potential friend waiting to be coaxed into existence by her nimble fingers. Her hands, usually stained with grease and smudged with solder, were currently still, resting on a smooth, obsidian-like shard. It was a fragment she’d found deep in the caverns, pulsing with a faint, internal light that mirrored the distant glow of Techtopia’s energy core.

Her mothers had found her there, huddled in the silence of the Dragon’s Lair, their faces etched with a mixture of relief and a fear she hadn’t seen before. Lucy, her voice a soft murmur, had spoken of the city’s precarious balance, of the shadows that always lurked at the edges of their bright existence. Luna, her touch firm but gentle on Ruby’s shoulder, had reminded her of the stories, of the sacrifices made to forge Techtopia, and of the responsibility that came with such a legacy. Ruby had listened, her mind a whirlwind of the dragon’s ethereal presence, the cave’s ancient aura, and the unsettling shift she felt in the city’s rhythm.
