The worn fabric of his father’s old work jacket, still smelling faintly of the synthetic lubricant Kaelen used in the fabrication plants, pressed against Tak’s cheek. He’d found it tucked away in the back of the family storage unit, a place usually reserved for obsolete data chips and faded ceremonial robes. Elara had been sorting through it, her movements slow and deliberate, a quiet hum escaping her lips as she retrieved a stack of brittle photo-albums. Tak, restless and adrift in the week preceding his TAK, had drifted in, drawn by the scent of nostalgia and the soft light filtering through the dusty windowpane.

“Remember this, Kaelen?” Elara’s voice was a gentle ripple in the otherwise still air. She held up a photograph, its edges softened by time. A younger Kaelen, his face unlined by the weariness that now often settled there, stood beside a radiant Elara, both beaming, their arms around each other. They were dressed in the smart, tailored attire of those who had achieved a respectable TAK score, a score that had granted them access to the mid-tier residential sectors.

Kaelen, who had been meticulously polishing a tarnished family heirloom – a small, intricately carved wooden bird – paused, his gaze falling on the photograph. A faint smile touched his lips, a fleeting thing that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Of course, I remember. The day we moved into Sector Gamma. Felt like we’d conquered the world.”
