The sketchbook sat on the low oak table where she’d left it that morning, its spine cracked and soft as old leather. Milda ran her fingers over the cover, tracing the faint pencil marks that had bled through from a drawing of a heron she’d attempted at fourteen. The autumn light through the window was thin, almost apologetic, and it caught the dust motes drifting above the pages like tiny planets.

There was the boy who had called her druta—thick, clumsy—in the third grade. There was the neighbor who had whispered that her mother’s garden was full of weeds, that their family didn’t belong. Page after page, the sketches were a map of every place she had been made to feel small.
