The cobbles of the Twilight District were slick with an eternal dampness, reflecting the bruised purples and greys of the sky above like shattered stained glass. Elias, his straw hat tilted low, his young face etched with a familiar, restless energy, paused. A tremor, not of the earth but of the air, vibrated through him. It was a whisper, fainter than usual, a thread of sorrow spun from decades past, snagging at his attention.

"Did you hear that, Silas?" he asked, his voice a low murmur, barely disturbing the quiet.

Silas, his own straw hat perched with a more settled air, adjusted his spectacles. The lenses, thick and round, seemed to magnify his inherent caution. He listened, his head tilted, but the only sounds that reached him were the distant, melancholic cry of a foghorn and the soft scuff of his own worn boots. "Hear what, Elias? The wind sighing through those skeletal rooftops? Or perhaps another phantom lament you've conjured from the damp air?" His tone was dry, a familiar counterpoint to Elias's ethereal sensitivity.
