The air in the common room hummed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the usual boisterous camaraderie that often filled the space. It had been days since Professor McDonald’s funeral, days since the weight of his unsolved murder had settled like a shroud over Howard University, and over me. The assignment he’d given me, the one that had felt like a bizarre, last-minute whim, now felt like a desperate plea from beyond the grave. And Brandon, his brow furrowed in thought, occasionally interjected with a sharp, incisive comment. They were the peculiar five, the ones Professor McDonald had specifically pointed out, the ones whose lives seemed to operate on a different plane of existence.

“Are you sure about this, Kira?” Caleb’s voice, tinged with concern, cut through my thoughts. He’d approached me earlier, his usual charm replaced by a genuine worry that I found both disarming and compelling.
