The fluorescent lights of the library hummed, a sterile counterpoint to the rustling pages and hushed whispers that filled the cavernous space. I traced the intricate patterns on the spine of an ancient tome, my mind still replaying the surreal encounter from earlier. Caleb, with his ethereal grace, had coaxed a wilting potted fern back to vibrant life with a mere touch, his fingertips glowing with a faint, emerald light. It was a spectacle so out of place in the mundane world of textbooks and overdue fines that it felt like a hallucination. The way she flinched from the encroaching sunlight, her hand instinctively shielding her face, was a stark reminder of her nocturnal nature. Later, I’d seen her at the campus café, a small, intricately carved wooden box resting beside her untouched salad. I’d caught a fleeting glimpse of the crimson liquid within – a chilling echo of the locket she wore constantly. It was a constant, visceral reminder of the lifeline that sustained her, a secret she guarded with fierce intensity.
