The fluorescent lights of the Howard University aquatic center hummed with an artificial cheerfulness that did little to dispel the unease settling in my gut. Natasha had been oddly evasive when I’d asked about her favorite study spot, her voice, usually a melodic murmur, taking on a more insistent, almost urgent tone as she’d simply said, “The pool. Come with me, Kira. You’ll understand.” Now, standing at the edge of the shimmering blue expanse, I was beginning to understand why she’d been so cryptic.

The air was thick with the scent of chlorine, a sterile counterpoint to the faint, almost imperceptible scent of salt and something wilder that clung to Natasha. She’d already slipped into the water, her movements fluid and unhindered, a stark contrast to the awkward humanity I’d observed in her before. Her dark hair fanned out around her head like a halo as she submerged, only her eyes, wide and luminous, remaining above the surface. Then, she began to sing.

It wasn’t a song in the traditional sense, not a melody with verses and a chorus. It was a sound that bypassed my ears and resonated directly in my bones, a lament imbued with an ancient, sorrowful beauty. It spoke of crushing depths, of lonely voyages, of a yearning for something lost. My journalistic instincts, honed by years of digging for the truth, screamed at me to analyze, to record, to understand. But another part of me, a more primal part, felt an undeniable pull, a desire to surrender to the exquisite ache in the music.
