The late afternoon sun, filtering through the tall, arched windows, cast long, dancing shadows across the room, as if nature itself was holding its breath.
“I know,” I said, my voice barely a tremor, yet it seemed to echo in the sudden silence. The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of stolen glances, inexplicable disappearances, and the undeniable aura of something fundamentally *other* that surrounded them.
Caleb, ever the poised one, leaned forward, his emerald eyes, usually sparkling with an easy charm, now held a flicker of something akin to concern. “Know what, Kira?” His voice was smooth, but I detected a subtle shift, a sharpening of his usual melodic tone.
