Chapter 38

Episode 38

Haunted sightings at Taylorsville nursing homes

2 min read

My time working within the hallowed, and at times, haunted halls of Utah's medical facilities has led me to many corners, some of which hold spectral echoes of the past. While my focus has often been on the larger hospitals, I've also spent time in nursing homes, places that, in their own quiet way, can harbor just as many restless spirits. Taylorsville, a community I’ve worked in, has its share of these facilities, and the stories that emanate from them are often tinged with a profound sadness. I recall one particular nursing home, a place that seemed to hold its breath, as if perpetually waiting for someone or something. It wasn't the grand, echoing corridors of a hospital, but rather the hushed intimacy of rooms filled with the lives of the elderly. Yet, the same phenomena I’d witnessed elsewhere began to surface. Lights would flicker in unoccupied rooms, the scent of lavender, a scent I’d come to associate with lingering presences, would drift through the air, and the distinct feeling of being observed was a constant companion. One evening, while assisting a resident, I saw it – a faint, shimmering outline of a woman, dressed in what appeared to be a simple, old-fashioned dress, standing by the window. She seemed to be looking out, a wistful expression on her translucent face. I froze, my heart pounding, but before I could fully process what I was seeing, she dissolved into the dim light. Later, a colleague confided that she, too, had seen similar apparitions, usually in the late hours, when the facility was at its quietest. These weren't frightening specters, but rather gentle, melancholic presences, perhaps tied to the lives lived within those walls. It's a poignant reminder that the veil between worlds can be thin, especially in places where so much life and so many memories have been gathered.
