Chapter 30

Episode 30

The spectre standing behind My electrophysiologist st University of Utah

2 min read

The sterile scent of the electrophysiology lab usually did little to comfort me, but today, with my own heart rhythm being the subject of intense scrutiny, it was particularly unnerving. I lay on the table, a maze of wires and catheters snaking into my veins, my chest a canvas for the cardiologist’s focused attention. Dr. Evans, my electrophysiologist, a man whose calm demeanor had always been a balm, was hunched over the monitors, his brow furrowed in concentration. He was explaining something to the attending nurse, his voice a low murmur against the rhythmic beeping of the machinery.

Then, I saw it. A translucent figure, shimmering slightly, standing directly behind Dr. Evans. It was tall, gaunt, and wore what looked like an old-fashioned lab coat, though the fabric seemed to ripple and distort as if seen through heat haze. Its face was indistinct, smudged and shadowed, but I could feel its gaze, heavy and sorrowful, fixed on Dr. Evans. It raised a spectral hand, its fingers long and skeletal, and hovered it just above the doctor’s shoulder.

My breath hitched. I wanted to scream, to warn him, but my throat was tight with fear. The nurse, however, seemed oblivious. He continued his duties, her movements precise and unhurried. Dr. Evans, too, remained absorbed in his work, completely unaware of the spectral presence looming behind him. The figure let out a silent sigh, a ripple passing through its ethereal form, before slowly fading, like smoke dissipating in still air. Dr. Evans glanced up, his eyes scanning the room briefly, as if sensing a change in the atmosphere. He met my gaze, and for a fleeting moment, I thought I saw a flicker of something in his eyes – recognition? Or perhaps just the strain of a long procedure. He offered a reassuring smile, but I knew, with a certainty that chilled me to the bone, that I had just witnessed something far beyond the scope of medical science. The phantom in the lab coat had been there, a silent observer in the heart of my own medical crisis.
