The sterile air of the operating theater always carried a peculiar hum, a vibration that seemed to resonate not just in the ears, but deep within the bones. It was a sound I’d become intimately familiar with, not just as a caregiver, but as a patient. The University of Utah Medical Center’s surgical suites were a place where life and death danced a delicate waltz, and sometimes, for me, that dance extended beyond the physical realm.

There was a particular surgery, a routine procedure that should have been uneventful, where the world shifted. As the anesthesia began its gentle descent, a familiar sense of detachment washed over me. It wasn't fear, not anymore. It was a strange, almost peaceful surrender. Then, I was no longer tethered to the gurney. I was floating, a disembodied observer in the very room I’d just occupied.

From my new vantage point, I could see myself, a still form beneath the bright surgical lights. The medical team moved with practiced efficiency, their voices a muted symphony of instructions and reassurances. I heard every word, every sterile sigh, every subtle shift of weight on the linoleum. Dr. Evans, his brow furrowed in concentration, directed the scrub nurse. "Scalpel," he'd say, his voice calm, methodical. "Suction."
