Chapter 14: The Voice on the Intercom
A disembodied voice calling My Name . Amy .. out over the intercom system, asking for help or giving cryptic messages, when no one is speaking.
The fluorescent lights of the old Salt Lake Regional Hospital hummed with a weary, familiar drone, a sound that had woven itself into the fabric of my nights for the past five years. Tonight, however, the hum felt different, laced with a tremor of unease that vibrated just beneath my skin. It was well past midnight, the hushed hours when the hospital breathed its deepest sighs, and the usual symphony of beeps and whirs had softened to a murmur. I was making my rounds on the third floor, a stretch of dimly lit corridors that always seemed to hold their breath, when it happened.
My name, “Amy,” drifted through the intercom, a disembodied whisper that snagged my attention like a thorn. It wasn’t the usual crackly, impersonal announcement. This was clear, almost intimate, tinged with a desperate urgency. My heart gave a startled leap against my ribs. I paused, my hand hovering over the push-plate of a patient room, straining to hear over the low thrum of the building.
“Amy,” the voice repeated, a little louder this time, laced with a tremor that sent a shiver down my spine. It sounded like it was coming from the speaker directly above me, a small, unassuming grille embedded in the stained acoustic tile. I looked up, my eyes tracing the faint outlines of dust bunnies clinging to its surface. There was no one there. No nurse at the station, no stray visitor, no technician fiddling with equipment. Just me, the sterile smell of disinfectant, and the echoing silence that followed the phantom call.
