The chill of the stone seeped through Mihnea's thin tunic, a familiar sensation in the hushed, echoing halls of the Ottoman court. He stood a respectful distance behind his uncle, Radu, who bowed low before the Sultan, his face a mask of practiced subservience. Mihnea, however, felt a different kind of chill, one that had nothing to do with the drafty chambers and everything to do with the gnawing unease that had settled in his gut since their arrival. Radu, on the other hand, seemed to embrace this subservience, to revel in the intricate dance of power and flattery that defined the Ottoman court. Mihnea felt a pang of something akin to disgust. Was this truly the best his uncle could offer their family, their principality? To bend the knee, to offer themselves as willing pawns in the Sultan’s grand game?
