Chapter 26

Episode 26

The chill of the monastery stone seeped through Mihnea’s thin robes, a familiar discomfort that had long since ceased to bother him. He knelt before the altar, the flickering candlelight casting dancing shadows on the ancient frescoes that adorned the walls. The air was thick with the scent of incense and old faith, a stark contrast to the scent of blood and fear that had clung to his father’s name for so long. He had come here, to this quiet sanctuary, seeking solace, and perhaps, a final act of devotion.

The plea to the Church had been a desperate one, a plea born from a father’s broken heart turned to a righteous, if sorrowful, vengeance. Vlad’s death had been ignominious, his body unceremoniously disposed of, his very existence denied by those who had profited from his downfall. The boyars, the very men Vlad had sought to control for the good of Wallachia, had ensured his father’s legacy was buried as deeply as his unmarked grave. But Mihnea, who had fought tooth and nail to reveal the truth of his father’s reign, could not bear for his father’s soul to be denied the dignity of Christian rites.

He had presented his case to the Abbot, a stern but fair man whose eyes held a flicker of understanding. Mihnea spoke not as a prince seeking political advantage, but as a son seeking peace for his father. He recounted the hardships Vlad had endured, the constant threat of the Ottomans, the betrayals from within, the impossible choices he had been forced to make. He presented the documents, the sealed letters, the personal accounts that painted a portrait not of a demon, but of a man deeply flawed, yes, but a man who had loved his country with a ferocity that bordered on obsession.
