The morning after felt like a dream I hadn't quite woken up from. The sterile scent of the communal bathroom, the harsh fluorescent lights, Daniel’s cheerful, oblivious chatter—it all seemed distant, muffled, as if I were experiencing it through a thick pane of glass. The feeling, that strange, hot, unfamiliar sensation that had bloomed in my chest yesterday, was still there, a low hum beneath the surface of my usual calculations.
I’d managed to get through my first official morning at Argentum College with a semblance of normalcy. Daniel, bless his organized heart, had guided me through the labyrinthine corridors of Ashford Hall, pointed out the dining hall (a monument to excess, packed with students already networking over lukewarm scrambled eggs), and patiently explained the intricacies of the campus bus system. I’d nodded, agreed, asked a few pertinent questions about schedules and club meetings, and kept my face carefully blank. The mask was back on, snug and familiar, but it felt… looser. As if something had come loose from the inside, threatening to expose the mechanics beneath.
We were sitting in the main dining hall, a cavernous space designed to impress with its sheer scale and opulent décor. Chandeliers dripped from the ceiling like crystalline tears, and long, polished oak tables stretched as far as the eye could see, already occupied by a vibrant, noisy throng. Parents, both proud and anxious, hovered over their progeny, offering last-minute advice and photo opportunities. Students, a dizzying array of designer labels and manufactured enthusiasm, clustered together, already forming the social cliques that would define their Argentum experience.
