Chapter 4
A Crack in the Facade
During an icebreaker, Evan unexpectedly experiences genuine attraction to Sophie, a sharp journalist. This novel feeling disorients him, making him blush and question his carefully constructed emotional detachment.
The common room was a battlefield of forced smiles and rehearsed anecdotes. Jessica, the RA whose cheerfulness felt as manufactured as the cheap upholstery on the armchairs, was orchestrating the "icebreaker" with the precision of a drill sergeant. Around the semicircle, names and hometowns were being exchanged, each fact about oneself delivered with a varying degree of practiced nonchalance or anxious oversharing.
My own turn had arrived and passed. "Evan," I’d stated, my voice even, my expression neutral. "From Connecticut. And I'm really bad at icebreakers." The resulting laughter had been a small victory, a testament to my ability to blend in, to be forgettable, to be *normal*. He was organized, predictable, and a valuable asset in my immediate objective: establishing a stable base of operations.
But it was the introduction of Connor, the red-haired boy with the rumpled designer clothes, that had truly piqued my interest. "Connor," he'd announced, his voice laced with a deliberate irony. "From Boston. And I'm really good at following rules." A ripple of amusement had gone through the group. He was performing rebellion, testing the waters, gauging reactions. A legacy, I’d noted. Wealthy. Potentially disruptive. A valuable piece on the board, if handled correctly.
